Character.AI export email not received? What to do while you wait
If you requested your Character.AI data and no email has arrived, you may still be within the normal processing window. Character.AI's official export instructions say processing can take 3–4 weeks. When the archive is ready, Character.AI sends a download link to the email associated with your account. The link lasts 7 days from when the email is sent, not from when you requested the export.
You can check your request, protect chats that are still accessible, and prepare to save the original archive when it arrives. You do not need to share your account credentials with a third-party tool.
First, make sure you actually requested the export
On the Character.AI website, follow:
Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data.
In the Character.AI mobile app, follow:
Profile → Settings → Legal & Privacy → Export Data.
A confirmation message or Success banner means the request was submitted, not that your file is ready. Interface labels can change, so follow the current Character.AI Help Center instructions if your screen looks different.
If you already submitted the request, there is no need to repeat these steps solely because the email has not arrived.
Check the right inbox — and the deadline
- Check the email address connected to your Character.AI account, including spam and filtered folders.
- Compare the date you requested the export with the official 3–4 week estimate. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date.
- If the estimated window has passed or you suspect a problem, use Character.AI's own Help Center or support channels. When You Call cannot see your request status or speed up the export.
- When the email arrives, download the archive before its 7-day link expires. Save the original file intact and keep an additional copy somewhere you control.
Important: Never forward export emails, sign-in links, passwords, session cookies or private account data to someone offering to retrieve your archive.
Save a chat you can still read today
You do not have to wait for the account archive to preserve words you can already access. If a conversation is still visible, you can copy its meaningful text and save it locally:
- Copy an accessible chat excerpt, character description or other text you are permitted to keep. A local UTF-8 TXT file also works.
- Open When You Call Rescue Notes.
- Paste the text, or explicitly select and review your local TXT. Add character or relationship context only if you want to; unknown speakers should stay unknown.
- Download your local JSON backup, then select the downloaded file with Check downloaded file to verify it against the current session's export. Keep the original source as well.
Save a conversation I can still access
This is a separate manual preservation path, not a way to request, import or reconstruct your full Character.AI account history. It can help safeguard a meaningful excerpt while the official export is pending.
Common questions
Does the 3–4 week estimate mean my archive will definitely arrive on time?
No. Character.AI describes it as a processing estimate, not a guaranteed deadline. Check its official help or support for an overdue request.
Can I download my export before Character.AI sends the email?
The official process sends the download link once the export is ready. When You Call cannot retrieve or accelerate that process.
What if the download link expires?
Check Character.AI's current account export instructions and support for the available next step. When You Call cannot reactivate an expired link.
Does the export definitely contain every old or archived chat?
Character.AI's October 8 guide describes how to request the export, but does not guarantee the presence of every old chat, branch, candidate or character. Keep anything important that remains accessible, and inspect the archive you receive rather than assuming completeness.
Will When You Call automatically remind me when the ZIP is ready?
No. Automatic email reminders are not a currently published service. You can set a calendar or device reminder yourself. There is no need to provide your email to use the free Rescue Notes editor.
What When You Call is — and isn't
When You Call is an independent, free browser-based tool for preserving user-accessible conversation excerpts and relationship notes in local files. The notes editor does not require an account or send private note text to an AI model. It does not sign in to Character.AI, submit official export requests, recover deleted messages or restore the original character model. A download is not treated as verified until you reselect the saved file in the same session.
