A simple path, at your pace
- Request the official archive. Follow Character.AI's own steps below. At our last successful check (October 14, 2026), its help page estimated 3–4 weeks for processing and said the download link is valid for 7 days after the email is sent. Check the official page for current details, and store the original archive separately.
- Keep accessible text now. Paste your own accessible words or preview a local TXT in Rescue Notes. You can start without waiting for or uploading an archive. We cannot guarantee which conversations, branches, definitions or media the official archive contains.
- Save and check your local backup. Download your When You Call JSON, then select that downloaded file to check it against this session's export. Keep the original source files alongside your notes.

In its October 12, 2026 official update, Character.AI announced a voluntary Chapter 11 process to pursue a court-supervised sale. The announcement said the platform remained operational at that time, with a wind-down conditional on no suitable proposal emerging. This is not a confirmed shutdown date or a guarantee of future service. Check the source for updates; keeping a copy does not depend on predicting the outcome.
What you can keep here
- You can: paste an exchange or description you can access; preview a local UTF-8 TXT; save and check your own When You Call JSON backup.
- You cannot: connect a Character.AI account, import its complete archive, retrieve inaccessible chats or recover a character's original model or voice.
Character names, relationship context and a share link are optional references. We do not open or fetch share links. Only preserve material you can access and are permitted to keep.
