How to save a Character.AI chat without a browser extension
You can save a Character.AI conversation you can still read without installing a browser extension or handing anyone your account credentials. Copy the text you want to keep, save it in a local file, and verify that the file was actually downloaded.
This approach is useful when you want to preserve one conversation, a character description, or a meaningful moment. It does not automatically download all your chats or reconstruct messages you can no longer see.
Save your accessible conversation in five steps
1. Keep the original words
Open a Character.AI conversation you still have permission to access. Copy the messages or excerpts that matter to you. If you can, retain the original order and clearly visible speaker labels. Do not guess who authored a message if the source doesn't tell you.
If you already have a UTF-8 TXT file with the material, you can use that instead. Keep a separate copy of the source text.
2. Open a private local editor
Go to When You Call Rescue Notes.
Paste your conversation into the editor, or select a local TXT file for preview and explicitly choose to use its text. The current notes workflow works in the browser; it does not need your Character.AI password, session cookies or a When You Call account.
3. Add only the context you know
You may note the character's name, a source link, a description or why the exchange mattered. Those details are optional. Your notes are not proof that an unknown speaker, relationship or chat branch has been recovered.
The goal is to keep genuine material, not create a convincing but invented transcript.
4. Download your own backup
Use the editor's Download editable copy action to download a local JSON backup. You can also download a readable TXT copy.
Both files contain readable text — they are not encrypted vaults. Store them securely, just as you would any personal document. Avoid posting them publicly or emailing private chats to strangers.
5. Check that you really saved it
A click on Download does not prove a file was saved. Find the downloaded JSON, return to the editor and use Check downloaded file to select it.
A same-session exact match verifies that the selected file matches that session's export. Reopening a file in a different session can validate its format, but does not prove an exact match to a previous session's unseen bytes.
Save and verify my accessible chat
What if my conversation is too long to copy?
You don't have to preserve everything in one session. Begin with an accessible section you care about, or work from a local TXT you have already prepared. Keep the original material alongside any notes.
If your goal is a complete account export, request it through Character.AI's official export process. As of the October 8, 2026 official guide, exports may take 3–4 weeks, and the emailed download link is valid for 7 days after it is sent.
Common questions
Can I do this on my phone?
If you can copy accessible text on your phone and use a browser to open the Rescue Notes page, you can follow the same manual workflow. Browser and file-download behavior varies by device, so confirm that your saved JSON is actually available and can be reopened; a desktop browser may be more convenient for large text.
Does the editor save an entire Character.AI account?
No. This manual workflow preserves the specific text you supply. It does not automatically browse an account, export hidden conversations, recreate missing turns or transfer the original AI model.
Does When You Call upload my conversation?
The current Rescue Notes editor is designed to keep your private text within the browser session and write the exported files to your device. It does not send the note content to When You Call servers or a cloud AI model. Hosting providers can still process ordinary connection metadata; see the privacy explanation.
Can these saved notes be imported into another companion app?
Do not assume that. A WYC JSON backup preserves its stated source and fields; compatibility with any other application's import format requires separate support and validation. It is not a restoration of the original Character.AI personality.
Should I keep the official ZIP if I later receive one?
Yes. Keep the original official archive intact and separate from any manual notes or derived backups. One does not automatically replace or authenticate the other.
A careful way to keep what matters
When You Call is an independent, free, browser-based preservation utility, not an official Character.AI exporter. It preserves material you choose and can verify a same-session JSON download. It does not guarantee recovery of inaccessible chats, full conversation history, chat branches, voices or original models.
You can start with one real exchange.
